Hi InTheTimes.com Girls!
I'm currently listening to the single "I Thank You" by Rebecca St. James from the album Wait For Me: The Best From Rebecca St. James !
My fav lyrics? "You've held onto my soul / And I’m never letting go / Never letting go"
How encouraging to know that God has a firm grip on our soul like is said in Romans 8:38-39, "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." (NIV)

Blessings! RUTH

Joy Lippard Interview
Wednesday, November 11th, 2009 at 12:00 AM by Ruth Tynes / Online Editor / InTheTimes.com
ITT:Share with the InTheTimes.com girls how your love of music got started!
Joy: I've really loved to sing every since I was little. But when I was around the age of 11 and started writing songs, I felt a passion and deep calling to pursue music as more than just a hobby, but as a ministry.
ITT:How did you get started playing the guitar? Do you play any other instruments? What advice / encouragement would you like to give InTheTimes.com girls about sticking with learning how to play an instrument?
Joy: My sister started taking guitar and piano lessons first. Being the younger sister, I wanted to be just like her, so I followed in her footsteps. She quit both instruments but I kept playing, thankfully with a little bit of force on my mom's part.
It's hard work, and guitar can be painful when you're first learning, but it's so worth it! It's really fun to be able to play just when you're hanging out with your friends around a bonfire or maybe an even larger audience in your Church band or something.
ITT:When / how did you decide that you wanted to sing / write professionally? Any advice / encouragement for InTheTimes.com girls who desire to be a professional Singer / Songwriter like yourself?
Joy: Again it was at age 11 that I started writing songs and felt the passion for music--to be my way of encouraging and comforting people. It was the day before the Sept 11th terrorist attacks happened, and the song I had written was so appropriate for the tragedy that took place, that I couldn't help but think that maybe God was calling me to music.
Like anything else, songwriting is a craft, and I truly believe it is a gift from God. Don't be ashamed if you don't have it, but if you do, that's wonderful...embrace it! Craft that skill to glorify God whether you're writing worship songs, pop songs, or whatever you're doing with that gift!
ITT:Give InTheTimes.com girls a little insight on the songwriting process for you--is there a specific type of song that you prefer to write or that you feel you are gifted to write, etc. ?
Joy: I love writing Pop / Singer-Songwriter style songs. I like telling stories in my songs and coming up with an ultimate word of encouragement or "happy ending" if you will. I like to write songs about the everyday experience I'm faced with...the good, the bad, and the ugly. I long to be real in my songs, like you're reading my journal or something, even though that can be scary, being so vulnerable!
Writing songs is different every time I sit down. If I'm co-writing, there is usually more of a formula. I introduce a lyric or melody idea, and then we run with that and start shaping a song around that.
But sometimes I can't come up with anything when I actually sit down and try to write a song. Some of my best ideas have just come to me when I'm lying down to go to bed at night or in the airport or something! I always have my mini-recorder or notebook to jot down the ideas, and then I take it to the guitar or piano to craft it more.
ITT:Above all, what is the goal of your music / concerts?
Joy: I really do want to be a good example for anyone who hears my music and sees my lifestyle. But especially for teenage girls, because obviously I can really relate to the things we go through.
I want to be able to encourage someone when they turn on their stereo and hear my music being played. I want to challenge them to love Jesus more and inspire them to do something great! Like the Nichole Nordeman song says, "I want to leave a legacy."
That is truly my desire...to make God famous and not go about living my life selfishly. Pointing to Christ in all that I do...and music is just another avenue to do that!
