Q: What Does It Mean To Be "a Christian" ?

Ruth: The phrase "Christian" refers to being "a follower of Jesus Christ".
Like on social networking web sites, we "follow" someone because we're interested in what they have to say.
In order to be interested in following someone, we have to have an idea of what they're about. We follow Recording Artists because we've heard their music, then we decide that we like listening to it, so we take that next step to "follow" them to learn more in-depth info, etc.
We follow people from School, because we've hung with them on some sort of level (sit next to them in class and casually chat, worked on a project together, are members of the same club, a friend-of-a-friend, etc.), we're then interested in learning more about them, and possibly connecting more, so we "follow" them.
Following The LORD Jesus Christ is the same! Are you interested in what Jesus has to say?
To get an idea of what Jesus Christ is about, read the Bible regularly. Start with the book of "Matthew" in the "New Testament" and then proceed from there. Don't forget the "Old Testament" too, it gives a lot of important history that helps us understand the words of The LORD better.
When we follow someone, we decide how "deep" into it we get. With some people, we peruse what they say every-now-and-then to get a basic overview of what's going on with them, so that we can feel semi-connected, maybe have something to chat about with others, etc.
Then, there are those people that we really follow! (lol) It seems like we are constantly "checking in" to see what the latest buzz is, when we talk about them with others, we are all passionate about what they said, etc. Even if we don't "know them" personally, you'd never know it by how we act! (smile)
In short, we are truly one of their "followers". It doesn't matter who does or doesn't like them, we don't care, because we're a hardcore follower! (smile)
Same goes with The LORD, we decide how passionate and personal we get about following Him.
Always remember, Jesus says, "Ask, and God will give to you. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will open for you. Yes, everyone who asks will receive. Everyone who searches will find. And everyone who knocks will have the door opened." (Matthew 7:7-8, NCV )
