Closet Organizing / Back to School Fashion series

Q: I take too much time in the morning getting dressed because my closet is a mess! What are some closet organizing tips ?

Ruth: You've got to schedule a Big Clean-Up Day! Because you're in school now, scheduling a Saturday might be the best day. Other than the obvious vacuuming, dusting, etc. organizing what you have is the #1 focus.

1) Lay out what you have.

2) Group clothes, shoes, accessories, etc. in piles based on their category. For example, when dealing with shirts, do a pile for tanks, short sleeve, 3/4 sleeves, long sleeves, etc.

3) Then go through each category and re-categorize based on what fits now, what doesn't fit (either because you've lost weight or you've gained weight, gotten taller, etc.), pieces that are faded, and so on.

4) Now group your clothes together in your closet based on their category. That way when you look in your closet for something to wear, you don't have to give so much thought to FAQ's like, "Does this fit?", "Is that too faded to wear?", "Do these need to be altered?", etc.

Make the experience fun! Make a day of it, play ITTpop Radio in the background to keep yourself upbeat and motivated. Do before and after photos. If you have a Blog, you may even want to blog about your experience to help other girls! Make sure to link back to this article at InTheTimes.com too!

I'm not a big fan of throwing clothes away, etc. because usually you can find good use for everything in your closet. So, even if you find some stuff that you wouldn't exactly want to rock now, put it to the side and we'll talk more about what to do with it coming up at ITT !
