Labor Day and Wearing White

Q: I've heard that you shouldn't wear white after Labor Day, what's the deal with this?
Ruth: ITT girls are international, so first off, remember that this is 'an American thing' (smile) There is some confusion over where exactly this trend originated. But, most people have heard about it through tradition / word of mouth passed down over the decades. Remember, Pop Culture is always changing, traditions change, and fashion trends definitely change. (lol)
Currently, this is a very regional thing. See the InTheTimes.com article, Summer vs. Fall Fashion for more insight. In some regions wearing white after Labor Day is a huge social faux pas, whereas other regions are more liberal.
If you've heard it once, you've heard it a bajillion times at ITT, and we're going to say it again... (smile) Wear what makes you feel comfortable!
2 THINGS TO KNOW about wearing White during the Fall & Winter months...
+ Observe the Hue: Look for "Winter White" (yes, this looks just like regular old white, lol), Ivory, and Antique Ivory pieces. Also don't stray away from Khaki (all of it's various hues) and Prints that have white as a primary color.
+ Fabric Selection is Everything: The big thing about knowing how to differentiate between "Spring-Summer" white pieces and "Fall-Winter" white pieces is the fabric.
For example, I have a pair of bright white cotton-ish, denim-ish skinny jeans / "jeggins" that I wear during the Spring/Summer months. Usually I'll pair them with cute baby tees and billowy tunics during these months, for a fun-in-the-sun feeling. But because of the fabric, I can also rock these jeggins during the Fall/Winter months. I now pair them with tunic-length sweaters and boots for a more cozy, cold weather feeling.
I also have a bright white long flowing skirt that I wear during the Spring/Summer months. Although this skirt is also made of cotton, it's a different texture of fabric, and has a different type of structure to it. So for me, there really is no way to mix things up to make this skirt Fall/Winter-ish...so I don't. That skirt stays in my Spring-Summer closet, it does not transition into my Fall-Winter wardrobe.
Likewise, I have a pair of ivory jean-style slacks that are made out of velor. In my current climate, this fabric is too heavy and hot to wear during Spring/Summer weather, so I don't. This piece resides in my Fall/Winter closet.
This is the kind of philosophy that you have to use for yourself and each of your wardrobe pieces.
Have fun!
