Q:I really want to change 'my image' ! I'm starting High School and my parents have given me permission to wear make-up, go out on group dates, and be more involved in extra-curricular activities. I'm really excited about my newfound freedom, but to be honest, I really don't want to go too overboard... Any advice?
A: Congratulations on getting ready to make a major transition in your life! High school can truly be 'some of the best years of your life' as the old cliché goes. Especially if like you, you are wanting to make God the center of your High School years!
"All a man's ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the LORD. Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. The LORD works out everything for his own ends -- even the wicked for a day of disaster." (Proverbs 16:2-4, NIV)
Remember that you are 'made in the image of God ' (see Genesis 9:6) so don't waste your time trying to fit into some sort of stereotypical 'high school girl ' profile.
"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same LORD. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men." (1 Corinthians 12:4-6, NIV)
Instead...
>>> Use your time to explore different things that you think you will like (ex.- different styles of clothing / make-up, school clubs, class electives, etc.)
>>> Don't let the fear of making mistakes / being 'embarrassed' keep you from trying new things and chasing a dream(s) that God has given you! Remember that we all make mistakes / are embarrassed at times! (see Romans 3:22-24)
>>> Don't fall into popularity traps! Make sure to not overcommit your time in an attempt to become more popular (ie- get to know and be known by more people, to get your picture in the yearbook the most times, etc.)
>>> Make sure to include attendance / involvement in your local Church / Youth Ministry / Girls Ministry in your schedule.
>>> Stay committed to your schoolwork, personal spiritual, physical, and emotional health.
>>> Don't try to rush into any types of relationships (dating or friendships). Don't be afraid to stand alone if necessary.
Be well-rounded, be happy, be yourself ! Make sure to talk to God about everything that is going on in your life and stay grounded in His Word--the Bible!
"Cast your cares on the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall." (Psalm 55:22, NIV)
Talk soon!
