Christmas Eve 1999, we brought my sister MereLove home from the hospital to be part of our family. That was the greatest gift!"

"I love getting together with all of my family on Christmas Eve. It is always very noisy and exciting!
We always gather around the piano and sing Christmas carols in harmony. My whole family is musical so we usually have guitars, banjos, clarinets, flutes, violins, and cellos that join in. It is so much fun just to make music together.
We all join hands before our Christmas meal and my grandpa (our family patriarch) prays a special prayer over the meal and over our family. There are usually tears in everyone's eyes by the time he is finished. My grandpa just doesn't pray little short prayers!
We then eat 'till we are stuffed. All the little ones are prancing around by that time just itching to open their gifts. We always make my Grandpa open his gifts first. Everyone “oohs” and “ahhs” Next the youngest child opens their gifts and we continue.
By the time the gifts are all opened, the rooms are knee deep in Christmas wrapping. We start cleaning up the paper and someone always wads some paper in a ball and we end up having a paper ball fight. Everyone is laughing and falling all over.
Then it is back to the kitchen for my aunts infamous chocolate cake, pecan pie, and unbaked fruit cake. We end the evening with more talking, singing, sledding, and lots of hugs all around!"

"To me Christmas means spending time with your family and celebrating Jesus' birth. In my family we always read the Christmas story because that's the most important thing.
Christmas also means lots of funny memories, at least in my family it does. It's not the gifts that make the memories; it's the memories that make the gifts."

"Growing up in a Christian home, there were many Christmas Eve services we attended. One in particular jumps out to me when I think about favorite memories.
My 2 sisters, my mom, and I were asked to sing the "special music" for the evening. This was the first time that we ever attempted a quartet.
The candlelight evening went beautifully—there was a sweet, soft spirit in the service. We all 4 got up to close the evening with our song, the first verse went just as planned, the second verse, I sang the wrong words.
Of course, there was that one person in the world that can make me crack up at any wrong time, my sister Patti. Patti started laughing about the word mess up and I could not stop myself from joining in.
By verse 3 my mom and my sister Maribeth were doing a duet, and by verse 4, my mom was doing a solo!
It helped us and the whole congregation to remember the joy part of Christmas."
