Q:What does "in the times" mean?
Ruth: The phrase "in the times" means "hip, contemporary, cool". Being "in the times" is about living a lifestyle that includes a personal relationship with God, through His Son and our Savior from sin, Jesus Christ.
Sometimes misconceptions get spread about the Christian lifestyle--that it is rigid or boring, not fun at all. It is one of my goals to break that misconception. Girls need to know that living the Christian lifestyle is very "it" and that they don't need to feel inhibited in living.
The LORD is very clear throughout the Bible, starting in the book of Genesis, that He only wishes the best for us. The LORD Jesus says in John 10:10, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." (NIV)
Communicating that message is what In the Times is all about.
Q:Why is your motto "Fashion + Entertainment + Faith + Fun" ?
Ruth: I chose to have a motto for In the Times to make sure that our Editorial Content stayed focused over the years. Fashion + Entertainment + Faith + Fun epitomizes our Editoral slant / focus / goal.
When creating the In the Times motto, I had to look at my own personal perspective. Being a "girlie-girl" and growing up during the Tween / Pre-Teen, Teen, and Young Adult phases of my life, so much of my time was spent doing 'fashion stuff' and entertainment. So fashion and entertainment were / are definitely topics that need to be front and center always with the In the Times brands.
Faith is the glue that keeps it all together and in proper perspective--faith in God and faith in Jesus Christ. But, this is the part that we girls sometimes leave out of our daily lifestyle and usually not intentionally.
With the In the Times brands, we teach girls that in the midst of all of the fun fashion and entertainment stuff that we engage in, we need to include time to build a personal relationship with the LORD. Our relationship with and faith in God needs to be just as important as scheduling our 3 wardrobe changes for the day and jamming to hot tunes with our friends on the way to our regular weekend trip to the mall !
Fun is the goal of girlie-girls, to have fun and be glamorous in all that she does, wherever, whenever, and with whomever. Girlie-girls seek to live an ultra fabulous lifestyle no matter the circumstances, good or bad.
The fact is, this can only be achieved when you have a true personal relationship with God--our Creator. I love the way the apostle Paul states it in Philippians 4:11-13, "I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through Him who gives me strength." (NIV)
I have learned through much personal experience that this verse is a fact / so true! So, at / with In the Times we seek to show / teach / instruct girls that there is a proper balance between Fashion, Entertainment, Faith, and Fun !
When we put God first--therefore His ways of living--in our daily lifestyle, God gives us the strength to live the truly ultra fabulous lifestyle! Good stuff, bad stuff, and everything in between, we can successfully focus, cope, and enjoy life, because He gives us the strength and inspiration to! Apart from Christ, life is faux. =)
Q:Why did you choose to start In the Times Girls Ministry?
Ruth: Because of my position as Editor of InTheTimes.com and In the Times magazine, as well as being a young girl myself, Senior Pastors, Youth Pastors, Girls Ministry Directors, Womens Ministry Directors, Denomination Heads and Youth Lay Leaders often solicit my insight into what is going on in Pop Culture and how their Church can reach Tween / Pre-Teen, Teen, and Young Adult girls in a culturally relevant, yet Biblically-based way.
Thus, we decided that the most effective way to accomplish this much needed goal, is through a brand that mirrors our brand for girls, yet is tailored for those who connect with young girls on a daily basis in their unique communities--Girls Ministers!
